LBIL 1054 PUBLIC SPEAKING (CHAPTER 1)

CHAPTER ONE (SPEAKING IN PUBLIC)

Public speaking is expressing ideas, views, opinions, on something that you believe in and interested in front of a group of people/ audience.

The importance of public speaking
• It makes a difference in things that you care so much
• It can persuade people to do something that you feel is right
• It informs people about things they do not know
• It entertains people and make them feel good about themselves

Similarities between public speaking and conversation
• Organize your thoughts logically
• Tailor your message to your audience
• Tell story for a maximum impact
• Adapt to listener feedback

Differences between public speaking and conversation
• More highly structured
• Requires more formal language
• Requires different methods of delivery

The speech communication process
• Speaker
 The person who is representing an oral message

• Message
 Whatever the speaker communicates to the listener
 verbal or non verbal word

• Channel
 The means by which the message is communicated
 e.g. telephone, radio, television

• Listener
 The person who receives the speaker’s message

• Feedback
 The messages usually non-verbal, sent from a listener to a speaker

• Interference
 Anything that impedes the communication of a message
 Can be external or internal to listeners

• Situation
 The time and place in which the speech communication occurs
